Douglas has spent over thirty years in the hardware and ironmongery industry. He has been Technical Manager of the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers since 2014 and prior to that he managed an ironmongery business in Belfast for over ten years. 

He is a member of the Competence Steering Group, Co-Chair of WG12 on competence in construction products and also chairs the BIM shadow Fenestration Relevant Authority of 12 allied trade associations. In addition to chairing BSI Committee B538/4 for building hardware he participates in 25 BSI committees and drafting panels. 

He is also UK Expert on 10 international standards committees at ISO and CEN level including hardware, accessibility, powered pedestrian doors and sustainability. He assists in overseeing the Registered Architectural Ironmonger RegAI CPD programme including the writing, delivering, and approving of CPD content for GAI. He is also regular contributor to industry magazines including Architectural Ironmongery Journal and Locksmiths Journal.
